How to Celebrate DOGust 1st 2026 (the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs)

Share

pet adoption

When you adopt a dog from a shelter, details of their past life often tend to be somewhat murky. Due to this, it’s sometimes impossible to know the exact date your rescue pup was born. North Shore Animal League America came up with a solution, and it’s called DOGust!1 DOGust falls on the 1st of August and was created as a universal birthday for shelter dogs. But how is it celebrated?

How to Celebrate DOGust 1st

There are plenty of great ideas swirling around about how you can celebrate DOGust, but it’s entirely up to you! From small gestures to full-on parties, the ways to make your pup—and other shelter pups—feel extra loved on their special day are endless. If you’d like to celebrate DOGust but aren’t sure how to go about it, here are some ideas.

1. Throw a DOGust Party

If you’re the kind of person who loves a great party and you know other dog parents who do too, why not throw a party to celebrate dogs everywhere?

Activity ideas include doggy treasure hunts with treats, toys set out for the dogs to play with, a “secret Santa” style approach to gift-buying, and a paddling pool so your guests can take a swim if it’s warm out. For fans of baking, you could always try your hand at homemade dog biscuits.

A quick hint: If any of your canine guests have a tendency to get territorial with toys like balls, you might want to reconsider having any flying about!

2. Arrange a Doggy Meet-Up

For those who prefer to keep things a bit more low-key, arranging a meet-up in the local dog park, dog-friendly café, or pretty much wherever you enjoy frequenting with your dog is an idea worth considering.

3. Take a Walk

Big celebrations are great and all, but nothing makes a pup happier than a walk in their absolute favorite place. This could be simply the usual route you take when you walk your dog, or it could be a special day out to a forest, beach, or park.

4. Pamper Your Dog

Whip out the nail clippers and brushes! DOGust is the perfect opportunity to spoil your dog with a monster pampering session! This could involve brushing out their coat, trimming their nails, or even giving them a massage.

5. Take Your Dog Shopping

If you’re planning on surprising your pup this DOGust, you could always take them to your local pet store and let them pick new toys. Providing a variety of fun and interactive toys helps keep your dog busy and prevents boredom from creeping in.

6. Donate to Your Local Shelter

Giving something back to an animal shelter, whether it’s the one you got your dog from or another shelter in your area, is a wonderful way to celebrate DOGust. Donations don’t have to be monetary either. Many shelters are in need of supplies like food, blankets, and toys.

7. Volunteer for the Day

There are a multitude of possible ways to volunteer your time (and maybe even your dog’s time) for the greater good this coming DOGust. You could volunteer at an animal shelter, help out at a fundraising event, or even sign your dog up as a therapy dog.

Some pet therapy organizations allow people with friendly, well-behaved dogs to volunteer in the community by visiting places like schools, nursing homes, and hospitals together. The goal is to offer emotional support to anyone who could do with a happy puppy face to brighten up their day.

8. Foster or Adopt a Dog

This one is a huge commitment, but if it’s something you’ve been thinking about and feel ready to do, DOGust could be the perfect opportunity to express interest in fostering or adopting a dog. Adopting or fostering instead of buying a dog supports shelters’ hard work and gives a dog another chance at the life they deserve.

Adopting is also a great way to learn as much as possible about your new best friend before you bring them home. Those who work in shelters are experienced in matching dogs with the perfect humans for them.

Final Thoughts

There is no right or wrong way to celebrate DOGust. Do you want to go about your day as normal but give your dog a few extra cuddles or treats? That’s great! Are you planning a gigantic party? You do you! You’re already doing an amazing thing by giving your shelter dog love and appreciation every day of the year!
